The Fine Structure of the Lung of the Mongolian gerbil

Abstract
The ultrastructure of respiratory epithelium of the Mongolian gerbil, Meriones meridianus, was examined by electron microscopy.
The epithelium was composed of type I and type II pneumocytes and a third type pulmonary epithelial cell, here called alveolar brush cell. The brush cell was characterized by short microvilli on its free edge, mitochondria, Golgi complex and rough endoplasmic reticulum. Newborn lung was characterized by followings; an increase in the occurrence of apically-located lamellar bodies in the type I< cells, the apparent extrusion of lamellar bodies from the type II cells, and the presence of lamellar bodies within the alveolar space. The inclusion bodies of type II cells in adult lung had vacuolated appearance with thin peripheral rim of heavily osmiophilic material. Lamellar bodies and osmiophilic membranes were similar to the underlying epithelial layer which covers the respiratory epithelium. These results support again the association of inclusion bodies and surface active materials.
